Buy a longboard — from 36 to 42 inches
A longboard rolls more calmly, further and more stably than a skateboard. That makes it the logical choice if what you mainly want to do is ride: to the station, along the coast, through the park. Apollo longboards run from 36 to 42 inches, in wood, bamboo and fibreglass, and are supplied fully assembled — including a T-tool so you can set everything up to your taste.
Which length and which material?
- 36 inches — the shortest and most agile size. Handy in the city and easy to carry along.
- 38 to 40 inches — the middle size and the most commonly chosen length. Stable at speed, still easy to steer.
- 42 inches — the longest deck: the calmest ride, the most comfort over distance.
As for materials: wood is the classic, sturdy and with a familiar flex. Bamboo springs a little more softly and dampens bumps. Fibreglass is stiffer and holds its line well at higher speed. Boards with Twin Tip in the name have a raised nose at both ends, so you can ride in both directions and turn more easily.
Longboard, cruiser or skateboard?
If you are after something shorter for getting around, have a look at the 27-inch midi cruisers. If you want to learn tricks, you are better off with a skateboard. And if what you have in mind is dancing and footwork on the board, take a look at the dancer longboards.
Frequently asked questions about longboards
Is a longboard suitable for beginners?
Yes, often even easier than a skateboard. The longer deck and larger wheels give more stability and roll more smoothly over bumps. Do learn to step off and brake calmly before you build up speed.
How do I brake on a longboard?
By foot braking: let your back foot drag along the asphalt until you come to a stop. Practise that on a flat stretch before you take on a slope. Never start out on a steep hill.
What is the T-tool for?
You use it to adjust the trucks and tighten the wheel bolts. Looser steering means more turn in the corners, tighter means more stability at speed. The T-tool is in the box with every longboard.
What protective gear do you recommend?
A helmet is far from a luxury when longboarding, because you travel faster than on a skateboard. Knee pads and wrist guards on top of that. Have a look at helmets and protective gear.
